The Windows partitions were not showing up under Places menu and Nautilus browser’s sidebar days ago in my Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick. And when I plugged in usb, it was also not auto-mounted and shown up in Nautilus. I need to manually mount these volumes in command line and it was so inconvenient.
I don’t know actually what the reason is, but I temporarily get the volume icons back by following steps.
1.) Run gconf-editor in Alt+F2 pop-up window or a CLI. Navigate to “apps/nautilus/desktop”, and make sure “volumes_visible” is checked.
2.) If the icons not appear, execute this command:
sudo /etc/init.d/dbus restart
After the two steps, my volume icons did appear. If problem still exist, refers to https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/73227
