In a fresh Ubuntu installation, one thing I would like to do is to turn off the overlay scrollbars instead using the old scrolling bars. Overlay Scrollbars feature comes with Unity since Ubuntu 11.04.

I found three ways to easily turn off the overlay scrollbars. All the ways need to log out and log back to take effect. Please feel free to leave a comment if you have a new method.

1. Turn Off Overlay Scrollbars using Dconf-editor.

First need to install dconf-tools via Ubuntu Software Center. Or Ctrl+Alt+T to launch terminal and run this command:

sudo apt-get install dconf-tools

Then, launch dconf-editor and un-tick “ubuntu-overlay-scrollbars” from org -> gnome -> desktop -> interface

2. Turn Off Overlay Scrollbars using Unsettings

Unsettings is a Unity tweaking tool. Install unsettings with 3 commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:diesch/testing
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install unsettings

Or download the .deb from:

download unsettings

Then, under unsettings’ windows tab turn off overlay scrollbars and apply changes.

3. Turn Off Overlay Scrollbars feature by removing it

We can easily disable overlay scrollbars feature by removing its packages.

Install synaptic package manager by this command:

sudo apt-get install synaptic

Then launch synaptic and search liboverlay-scrollbars package, right-click to mark removal.
