Check out the Grid plug-in under Window Management in Compiz Config Settings Manager. It uses keyboard short-cuts Ctrl+Alt + Key from Number Pad (that is the "grid") to tile focused window. Very clean, simple, and efficient! Of course you can change key short-cuts to suit yourself, but the default works fine. Definitely worth a try.
