Gmount-iso is a small tool written using PyGTK and Glade. It allows you to easily mount your cd images. This is a frontend to the ‘mount -o loop -t iso9660 foo.iso /mountpoint’ command

Install Gmount-iso

Gmount-iso is available from ubuntu software center, just search “gmount-iso” in
Applications/Ubuntu Software Center
(
applications/Add&Remove
for old versions)
Or,go to its homepage:http://www.crans.ens-cachan.fr/Syst%C3%A8meLinux/GmountIso

Launch gmount-iso from
applications->System Tools->Gmount-iso
.In this small window, click the first “Open”button to choose an iso image you want to mount and click the second one to choose mount point where this iso would mount to (or just type in the box). And click “Jump to” to open this folder.

Ubuntu has a command called mount which lets you access to partitions in other filesystem,or from internet. In the tutorial I’ll make a brief introduction in using the command.

For instance, mount a ntfs filesystem partition in write and read mode:

sudo mount /dev/sda5 /media/diske -t ntfs -o rw

In the command, “/dev/sda5″ is the location of the partition you want to mount. And “/media/diske” is the mount point.

The two argument:

-t options tells which filesystem of the partition.

CD or cd image file: iso9660(use iso9660 instead "options",same to following)

Dos fat16 filesystem: msdos

Windows 9x fat32 filesystem: vfat

Windwos Ntfs filesystem: ntfs

Mount an internet share file from Windows: smbfs

Mount an internet share file from Unix(Lniux): nfs

-o options mount mode of partitions

loop: mount a file as partition(for instance mount .iso file)

ro: mount in read only mode

rw: mount in read and write mode

locharset: tells character set to access the filesystem

Tips:
Click here if want to mount partitions automatically at login.
Click here for mount .iso image file

First, create a directory which you want to mount ISO images to by running following command in terminal:

sudo mkdir /media/ISOimage

Then, add the loop module to your kernel,so it is possible to mount a compressed filesystem file:

sudo modprobe loop

Now,use following command to mount ISO image:

sudo mount ubuntu-9.04-desktop-amd64.iso /media/ISOimage/ -t iso9660 -o loop

replace “ubuntu-9.04-desktop-amd64.iso”to your ISO image.
And,use the command to umount ISO image:

sudo umount /media/ISOimage

In following screen,I mounted a ISO image from a ntfs drive:

Go to /media/ISOimage,available contents in mounted ISO image will be present to you.

My ubuntu 8.10 was installed from winXP, and it doesn’t automatically mount ntfs drive,so I mount manually when a ntfs drive with something I need

Someone may have the same problem, and I will show you how to deal with it.

1.Open a terminal window and type

Code:

sudo fdisk -l

you need to remember location of the drive you want to auto-mount,and in my case it is /dev/sda6

2.Create a file as the mount point by typing

Code:

sudo mkdir /media/mpoint

3.Type following code in terminal window

Code:

sudo gedit /etc/fstab

you will be presented with the fstab file,it lists where to mount the drive

4.At the end of the fstab file add following:

/dev/sda6 /media/mpoint ntfs-3g default 0 0

then save and close it.

Now you can test by typing:

Code:

sudo mount -a

Tips:

you can change the drive name by typing following code, and the drive must be unmount first

Code:

sudo apt-get install ntfsprogs

sudo ntfslabel /dev/sda6 jmk

restart, and you will see disk “jmk” on the desktop
