If you dislike the little box that pops up in the top right corner of Gnome desktop and would like a change, you might want to use notify-osd by Leolik to optionally change popup bubble’s location.

Install notify-osd

Just open up a terminal window from Applications -> Accessories menu and run following commands to install notify-osd from Leolik’s PPA (supports Karmic, Lucid, and Maverick):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:leolik/leoli
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install notify-osd

Change Gnome Pop-up Notification Location

Now, restart notify-osd with:

pkill notify-osd

and type in console to change popup notification location:

gconftool-2 -s /apps/notify-osd/gravity --type=int [number]

where is [number]:

1 – top-right corner
2 – middle-right
3 – bottom-right corner
4 – bottom-left corner
5 – middle-left
6 – top-left corner

Alternatively, run gconf-editor command and change the value of the only key in apps/notify-osd

Finally, try the effect with notify-send command. For example:

notify-send UbuntuGuide.net

and see the picture:
