If you prefer Opera browser more than Mozilla Firefox, you may want to install the latest stable Opera 11.62 and set default to replace Firefox in the upcoming Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Here’re two ways to install Opera browser in Ubuntu

  • Method 1. Download the package from the official site download page

Choose Ubuntu System, Default package, and select download server. Finally, click download. It’s deb package, double click to install it.

  • Method 2. Add the source into Ubuntu repository and keep update.

Launch a terminal window and execute following commands:

    sudo sh -c ‘echo “deb http://deb.opera.com/opera/ stable non-free” >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/opera.list’
    sudo sh -c ‘wget -O – http://deb.opera.com/archive.key | apt-key add -’
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install opera

  • Set Opera as defaul web browser in Ubuntu

Once Opera installed in Ubuntu, navigate to System Settings -> System Info. In Default Applications choose Opera in ‘web’ drop-down box.
