HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows.

This tutorial will show you how to install the latest official HandBrake releases for Ubuntu from ppa. For now, the latest released is handbrake 0.9.8, the PPA provides the packages for Ubuntu 12.04, 11.10, 11.04 and 10.10.

Install official HandBrake release in Ubuntu:

Open terminal from the dash home or press Ctrl+Alt+T, add the ppa:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:stebbins/handbrake-releases


sudo apt-get update

Install handbrake gui:

sudo apt-get install handbrake-gtk

Install handbrake cli (command line interface):

sudo apt-get install handbrake-cli
