The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program, a sophisticated image and photo editor. Ubuntu 12.04 includes Gimp version 2.6 available in ubuntu-software-center, but it’s a little out of date. This simple tutorial will show you how to install the latest Gimp 2.8 in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise using the official ppa.

Open terminal from the dash home or press Ctrl+Alt+T.

  • Run this command to add the gimp ppa to your repository:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp
  • Run this to update the source:
    sudo apt-get update
  • Install Gimp 2.8:
    sudo apt-get install gimp gimp-help-en
