Cinnamon is the default desktop environment in the new Linux Mint 13. It’s a fork of Gnome Shell that brings the classic Gnome 2 feel. This simple tutorial will show you how to install the latest stable version of cinnamon desktop.

For now the latest cinnamon is version 1.4. The Cinnamon stable ppa provides packages for Ubuntu 12.04 Precise and 11.10 Oneiric (but Oneiric will not get any new update).

Install Cinnamon in Ubuntu:

Hit Ctrl+Alt+T to launch a terminal window, copy and paste this command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable

Now update and install cinnamon via:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

Log out and you’ll find cinnamon session at log-in screen.

Refer to Cinnamon homepage for themes and applets.
