This simple tutorial is going to show you how to reset your Ubuntu 12.10 Unity desktop to the default settings if something goes wrong. The “unity –reset” command used to reset Unity in previous Ubuntu version won’t work in Ubuntu 12.10, here’s the new way to do this, which also work in Ubuntu 12.04.

To get started:

Hit Ctrl+Alt+T to open a terminal, copy and paste this command and hit run to install dconf-tools:

sudo apt-get install dconf-tools

Then, run this command to reset Unity and and Compiz:

dconf reset -f /org/compiz/

Finally, reboot or run this command to restart Unity to take effect:

setsid unity
