I had similar problem with headphones. That solved my problem:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive/ppa

But last week I have mute main speakers when no headphones is plugged. Change volume level on different alsa mixers doesn't make any effects (volume level is mute back when I try to up volume level). Some players doesn't work properly (except SMPlayer).

had the same problem in UUE 2.7 (lucid)- i used some creative muting /unmuting /plugging-in-of my headphones...
UUE 2.8 (maverick)= not so lucky. no amount of subtle switchery helps as the sound mutes each time i plug in the jack (2.7 muted @ unplug!).
asus k60ij notebook.
...holding out for a fix.

I have this problem but when I do either of these options I only get three columns, headphones are not an option.

Looks like this: http://imgur.com/dPCpt.png

I have Ubuntu 10.04, alsa 1.0.22, and notebook ASUS K52J.

I've tried most of the solutions I could google, but none worked for me. What can I do?
