By default ssh service is not enabled in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin. It can be easily enabled by installing openssh-server.

  • Open up a terminal window from the dash, or use Ctrl+Alt+T key combination.

  • Install openssh-server, copy and paste following code into terminal window and hit enter.
    sudo apt-get install openssh-server
  • This is optional, configure ssh setting by edit file ‘/etc/ssh/sshd_config’. Use this command:
    sudo gedit /etc/ssh/sshd_config

After that, restart ssh service to take effect.

    sudo /etc/init.d/ssh restart
  • Now, you can ssh connect to this host via ssh client like PuTTY, or use this command:
    ssh hostname -l username

That’s it!
