Unityfox- Add download process for Firefox on Unity Launcher

Unityfox is a firefox extension to add a download progress bar and active downloads count to the Firefox icon on the launcher in Unity.

See the effect:

To install this plugin, use your firefox browser to open: addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/unityfox/.

Click ‘Add to Firefox’ and it takes effect without restart firefox.

Latest Firefox 9.0 PPA for ubuntu 11.10 & 11.04 available in ‘Mozilla Security’

Firefox 9.0 stable was released two days ago. Mozilla Stable PPA has updated the packages to the latest but only for Ubuntu 10.04 & 10.10, and other Ubuntu editions can try Firefox 9 by downloading code from Mozilla.org, or waiting for the repository to update.

Now, Ubuntu-Mozilla-Security/PPA has updated the packages of latest Firefox 9 for Ubuntu 11.10 & 11.04.

If you can’t wait to upgrade your Firefox to latest, open up a terminal window and run following commands to add the ppa:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install firefox

Firefox 9.0 Stable Released (ppa updated for Ubuntu 10.04 & 10.10)

Mozilla Firefox 9.0 stable has just released few hours ago. The new release brings Type Inference which significantly improves JavaScript performance.

Firefox 9.0 has the following changes:

Added Type Inference, significantly improving JavaScript performance
Improved theme integration for Mac OS X Lion
Added two finger swipe navigation for Mac OS X Lion
Added support for querying Do Not Track status via JavaScript

The Firefox Stable PPA has updated for Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid and 10.10 Maverick, add the ppa and install Firefox 9.0 via:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install firefox

For now, it has not yet come in Precise’s repository. Just download from Firefox 9 from:http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html

Install Firefox 8 and Future Versions in Ubuntu 11.10/11.04/10.10/10.04

Firefox 8 is the next version of Mozilla Firefox web browser. Mozilla team built several PPAs for current and future Firefox versions.

The stable PPA contains current version of Firefox(current is firefox 7) and supports old versions of Ubuntu. Normally, the latest Ubuntu release auto-upgrade Firefox to the latest stable version.

The next PPA contains releases of Firefox from the beta channel. Now, we can get Firefox 8 from this ppa, but it will remove previous installed verison. When Firefox 8 become stable, it should be moved into stable ppa and I think it will be default in next Ubuntu version.

So to install Firefox 8, add this ppa with following commands in terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-next
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox

The Firefox Aurora PPA contains builds of Firefox from the aurora channel, currently it is firefox 9. If you want to try it, you can add this ppa. But it will remove previous installed Firefox version.

The Daily build PPA contains packages for both Firefox and Thunderbird. Currently, they’re Firefox 11.0 alpha1 and Thunderbird 11.0 alhpa1(The package named 11.0, but it’s 10.0 in my installed about page). It’s an independent installation, it won’t remove previous installed Firefox verion.

Install firefox 7 stable in Ubuntu 11.10/10.04/10.10

Firefox 7.0 final has been released on September 27th, in this version it has the following changes:

Drastically improved memory handling for certain use cases
Added a new rendering backend to speed up Canvas operations on Windows systems
Bookmark and password changes now sync almost instantly when using Firefox Sync
The ‘http://’ URL prefix is now hidden by default
Added support for text-overflow: ellipsis

Installation

1.) Download Firefox 7.0 for non installation: FTP downloading.
Just download and extract firefox-7.0.tar.bz2, and then click the file to launch Firefox 7.0

2.) Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 user can install Firefox 7 from firefox-stable/ppa by running following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox

3.) Ubuntu 11.10 user can upgrade from default installed Firefox 7 beta via update-manager or by running:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

I’m running Ubuntu Oneiric beta, I don’t know If Firefox 7 is available in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty’s universe repository. So tell me how if you installed Firefox 7 final in Natty.

Firefox 5 Final released (upgrade in Ubuntu 11.04)

Firefox 5 was just released on Jun 21, it has the following changes:

Added support for CSS animations
The Do-Not-Track header preference has been moved to increase discoverability
Tuned HTTP idle connection logic for increased performance
Improved canvas, JavaScript, memory, and networking performance
Improved standards support for HTML5, XHR, MathML, SMIL, and canvas
Improved spell checking for some locales
Improved desktop environment integration for Linux users
WebGL content can no longer load cross-domain textures

Upgrade firebox web browser to v5.0 in Ubuntu 11.04

This release is already available in official Ubuntu 11.04 security repository. It makes the upgrade easy, you can just launch Update Manager and run a normal update.

Or just install update for firefox with the commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox

Install Thunderbird 5 Beta in Ubuntu 10.04/10.10/11.04 from PPA

Thunderbird 5.0 beta was released few days ago, and it has the following changes:

New Addons Manager and extension management API (user interface will be changed before final release)
Tabs can now be reordered and dragged to different windows
Revised account creation wizard, offering improved set-up
Attachment sizes now displayed along with attachments
New troubleshooting information page to aid supporting and diagnosing problems in Thunderbird
Plugins can now be loaded in RSS feeds by default
Various other user interface fixes and improvements

A new created untrusted ppa provides packages of Thunderbird beta for Ubuntu Lucid, Karmic, and Natty. Use following commands adding this ppa and install Thunderbird 5 beta:

Firefox 4 final coming soon(Download already available)

The Firefox 4 stable is coming with a new interface, HTML5 support, 3D on the web, faster startup times and graphics rendering, and other goodness. Although the official site has not yet announced this final release, ftp downloads has come out.
